JavaScript transformation and conversion: preserve meaning

Use this guide to choose a suitable utility, understand the result and avoid common mistakes. The best workflow depends on your code, the intended output and where that output will be used.

Know what is being transformed

A transformation tool changes source code or converts data from one representation to another. For example, converting a JSON value into a JavaScript representation is different from executing JavaScript and serializing its result. Understand the input and output formats before using a converter.

Use representative input

Test nested objects, arrays, Unicode text, escaped characters, empty values and malformed input. A simple example may work while edge cases reveal how a tool handles quotes, special characters or unsupported syntax. Review the generated result instead of copying it blindly into an application.

Distinguish conversion from execution

A converter should not need to execute arbitrary source code just to change its representation. Do not run untrusted code to test a transformation, and do not assume that converted output is safe for every HTML, URL or JavaScript context. Context-specific escaping still matters.

Keep transformations reversible where possible

Retain the original input and document any lossy conversion. Validate the output with the parser or application that will consume it. When the transformation is part of a production workflow, add automated tests for representative cases and unexpected input.
